Well along with being the most vocal soccer mom around I am also the Fundraiser/Scrip/Sponsor Coordinator for my daughter’s club team and will be holding the same position on my son’s team when they move over to the club that is affiliated with Cal South.
When I was approached last year to help organize and recruit for Valerie’s one of the things that I made very clear is that if we were going to do this we would have to be willing to make every effort to support some of the lower income players. The current coach and I agreed that this team was all about the girls and not about the money.
With this huge statement being made we have done our absolute best to find different fundraising methods. A few of our girls have not had to pay anything out of pocket because of all their parent’s work fundraising.
We would have lost quite a few of our stongest players if it was for the fundraising and although the organizing at times can get pretty hairy. We’ve had car washes, bake sales, and parents have worked entertainment events at a local pavillion serving beer to rowdy concert goers. We sell discount movie tickets to our local movie theatre and we sell scrip cards for a variety of local and national stores. We are right now finishing up a candle drive and will be selling discount fast food booklets starting next week. Some of our projects have been required as a team building exercise and others have been optional.
Many other teams have made comments that they have never seen a club team fundraise so much. At first I thought they thought it was too much but in the end I found out that mostly they were envious of the fact that our parents were getting so much help. I will start putting a list of resources on fundraising and hopefully it will help others in our situation.
That’s it for now,
